Lugard Falls, which is found in Kenya’s largest National Park, Tsavo East National Park, is different from other waterfalls. It is not how high the water drops but how strong the water is that is why it is so special and a thrilling feature to see when travelling on a game drive.
The falls, which are named after Captain Lugard, were formed from volcanic rocks as the Galana River meandered its way through the Park. This constant rubbing action has turned the riverbed into an amazing gallery of natural art where the rocks have been carved into perfectly round smooth holes.

The River’s Incredible Artwork
The true beauty of Lugard Falls is the shape that was formed after water from the Galana River cut into the land. Rocks in the Galana River disrupted the water’s flow, forcing it to squeeze through narrow, rocky gorges creating a loud roar. The water’s persistent flow eroded and smoothed the colorful rocks, shaping deep channels and basins.
This nature’s wonder is a unique feature where visitors as they are on a game drive on Tsavo East National Park as they pass by Galana River they can experience it and create unforgettable memories. It is a photogenic area.
The Animal Meeting Spot
Galana River is the only reliable source of water for miles, making the area around Lugard Falls prone to wildlife thus it one of the best places for incredible sightings. The constant need for water has drawn wildlife from the drier parts of the plain to the riverbank making it a central area of activities throughout the day.
The famous red elephants are found here. They get their unique colour from bathing in the park’s reddish, iron-rich mud. Seeing a massive herd of these giants come down to drink against the backdrop of the swirling water is a sight you will never forget. You will also spot the massive hippos and various antelopes like the waterbuck cautiously testing the banks before they take a sip.
Finding the Crocodiles
One of the most thrilling stops nearby is Crocodile Point, and yes, it delivers exactly what the name promises. This is a fantastic place where visitors can safely look down and see the mighty Nile crocodiles doing what they do best.
The huge crocodiles lie perfectly still on the warm rocks, looking like statues, or floating just below the surface, waiting patiently. The entire riverbank is a corridor for wildlife, which is why the safari roads often run right alongside it. This gives you amazing viewing from the safety of your vehicle, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon when all the animals head down to quench their thirst.Travellers should make sure to carry their camera for an amazing experience.
We Need to Protect This Place
Even though the falls look strong and permanent, this entire river system is actually facing some serious problems that we need to think about.
One big issue is climate change. This means the area experiences more extreme weather like super-bad droughts where the river almost dries up, and then massive, sudden floods that cause chaos. These shifts make life really hard for all the animals that depend on a steady, predictable water supply.
The other big challenge comes from people. All the farms and industries further up the river are taking a lot of water out for irrigation, meaning less water actually makes it down to the park. Protecting the Galana River and the beautiful Lugard Falls means that everyone living along its path has to work together, because if the river struggles, all the amazing wildlife in Tsavo struggles too.
